Kleve is located exactly where the Rhine River leaves Germany and enters the Netherlands, where it then divides into two separate rivers. Even from a far-off distance, the way to Kleve is marked by Schwanenburg, the beautiful landmark of the former dukes' and spa town. The city proudly perched above the region on a steep hill between the Rhine River and Klever Reichswald (imperial forest).
Here in the Lower Rhine polder landscape, the wide lowlands of the Rhine River and its ever-shifting riverbed are bounded on both sides by gently rolling, wooded hills remnant from the Ice Age.
The steep hill of the Schwanenburg is located on a mountain range that follows the left bank of the Rhine River from Xanten to Nimwegen. This “cliff”, or steep slope of the castle hill, first gave the castle and then the city their names (Kliff is German for cliff, Kliff = Kleve).
