In order to protect the public peace in Upper Lusatia, the cities of Bautzen, Görlitz, Kamenz, Lauban, Löbau, and Zittau formed a military alliance on August 21, 1346 originally aimed against robber barons.
Beginning as a somewhat loose “vigilant alliance”, the 6-city alliance developed into an institution that has had a decisive influence on the region’s history for centuries and outlived all other city alliances.
The alliance led to a significant upswing in the reputation and political power of the participating cities.
It’s not unlikely that the foundation of the alliance was the idea of Karl IV, who wished to create a counterbalance to the landed gentry. He recognized the Upper Lusatian 6-city alliance in 1351 and came to Upper Lusatia himself in 1355, where he ordered the destruction of ostracized robbers’ villages by the cities.
